Marah on a bridge to somewhere...
Marah: Philly's own masters of rock, Marah are breaking their own mold with the first release to follow their disbanding and reforming in early 2008. It is one thing to make the next record, it is another thing to have to prove to the world that you are better than ever. One look at the recent live shows will let any hard core Marah fan know there are no doubts and no time to be wasted analysing line ups. Founder Dave Beilanko leads in typical style the band of Christine Smith - Keys and vox, Johnny Pisano - bass, and Martin Lynds - Drums. The new record is a cross section of basic tracks cut in a studio in Nashville and tracks cut in a home studio in Central PA. Michael Tudor came in to the picture during pre-production to help the band assemble a bullet proof home recording set up, assess existing material and bring it to completion. Of course once Marah's studio was up and running, new tracks came tumbling out. The resulting recordings show the strength of the group while also capturing the spontaneity of the writing and multi-instrumental talents of the core members Dave and Christine. The album is being mixed at Mama's Place in Woodstock by Michael Tudor and the band. The first single Put 'em in the Graveyard has just been digitally released. the completed album is slated for early 2010. Check out the Marah site.

JLee and Jenni
Hard Drugs: Vancouver rock band Hard Drugs has been holed up in Silver Hollow making the follow up album to their ambitious self titled rock opera which tells the unvarnished tail of a couple of star crossed lovers lost in the depths of addiction. This new project is a collection of songs written during the months recording the opera. Hard Drugs, a cross between Johnny Cash, The Modern Lovers and The Replacements, is lead by songwriter Jeffry Lee (Blood Meridian). "JLee" as he is known, plays guitar and shares vocals with his lovely better half and co-founder Jenni Lee . As the comparisons suggest, Hard Drugs has a traditional caste to their material. Their performance is also close to their roots. Rarely today in the rock genre do you see a more honest presentation. Beyond first impressions, Hard Drugs encompasses a depth and an irony which stems from clever, hard edged song writing that is immediately timeless. They have done their heroes proud. Michael Tudor is producing this record along with JLee. All the tracking was done at Mama's Place in Woodstock. Basic tracks are almost finished. They are only to do a few overdubs and will be ready for mixing. The tambourine plays a highly prominent roll in this production. During their first album, it was suggested to JLee that if he was not careful, he would end up with tambourine on every song on the record, to which he replied, that was exactly what he was aiming for. Check out the Hard Drugs site.

Professor David Purcell
NYU Music Dept: This Fall, Michael Tudor has been a guest speaker at NYU in Music Attorney/Musician David Purcell's course on the business of music. Considering the shape of the music biz of late, this is definitely not a subject for the faint of heart. Students attending this course may feel more like they are enrolled in autopsy 101. But this perhaps is what makes this exercise particularly exciting. We are all trying to adapt to a new paradigm that is not fully shifted. These students are present at a rebirth of the music industry that will prove to be the most challenging metamorphosis of the business model to happen in decades. Hopefully, some of them will grow to be the captains of the new industry. How will they do this? Will they remember their day with Michael Tudor when they are at the top? No one can say. For now anyway, Michael spoke about the process of record production; not the fairy tail version, but the hide-under-your-bed version. The students did not miss a beat and asked all the right questions. Today, this is what we in the music business need to do, ask the right questions...

Mike and Ruthy: the most bad ass married musical duo since Stephen Foster and Mae West strutted the boards in ‘23. Hailing from West Hurley, NY, their newest baby is a home recorded album titled Waltz of the Chickadee. It mixes stunning orginal and tradition folk/bluegrass/blues songs. Michael Tudor met the duo at a session for a Mark Mulcahy tribute album. They joined Adam Greenberg of Senator to build a dark and swimmy remake of the song The Way That She Really Is. A month later, Mike and Ruthy came back to Michael’s Mama's Place in Woodstock to Master their new album for CD release. Please give a fine WWW welcome to the Catskill kids themselves... Dare Dukes

Dare Dukes: singer songwriter out of Savanna by way of New York by way of Minneapolis by way of San Jose has a style that reflects the twists and turns of his odyssey across America. He rejects the surface of his american experience and instead gives us what is below the crust. Those unassuming details of our lives are pressure charged and forced out by magma and steam through the cracks or his lyric prose. In the beginning of this recording process, Michael got a call from Dare about doing a quick demo of the songs he was playing with Paul Garisto and Mark Boquist. They got together at Puremix basement studio in New York's East Village. What happened in that studio was beyond what they had anticipated. They captured something that was to be the beginnings of the new album, Prettiest Transmitter of All, release this November. It had been a good day. Check out the Dare Dukes site.
